Fatalities on the Rise in Ohio
From 2012-2014 Ohio has seen the number of workplace fatalities rise by more than 10% per year. Ohio now averages approximately one fatality per week. As part of OSHA's attempt to reduce the number of fatalities they have developed an outreach flyer to educate employers and employees on the hazards leading to these deaths. Employers are also encouraged to utilize the On-Site Consultation Program by calling 1-800-282-1425.
What are the hazards leading to Ohio's fatalities?
- Falls (34%)
- Struck (27%)
- Caught (22.7%)
- Fire/Explosions (5%)
- Electrocution (4.3%)
- Workplace Violence (2.8%)
- Heat Stress (2.1%)
- Exposures (2.1%)

Ohio University Student Association
The Central Ohio Local Section has a long history of supporting the Ohio
University Industrial Hygiene Program, but over the past few years the
communication between the program and COAIHA dropped off leading to very little interaction between them. This year Erica
Gingerich volunteered to act as the COAIHA Student Section Liaison. Erica and the Executive Committee have been working with the re-branded OU Occupational Safety & Hygiene Program to reestablish our relationship. Dr. Tim Ryan (program advisor) and Ashley Van Bibber (President, OHS/EH Student Association) are working with Erica to have COAIHA sponsor the OHS/EH Student Association as an AIHA affiliated student section. As part of this sponsorship COAIHA will help find speakers, identify facility tours students, and work to involve students in educational opportunities.
We are currently looking for volunteers for two opportunities; if you are interested in volunteering for either of these please email Erica Gingerich or Ryan Moon:
- Volunteer for a panel discussion during their Senior Seminar course which will be held in mid-February.
- OU is looking for companies that are willing to host the students for a plant/facilities tour.

How To Use Our New Website
See our "How To" page if you need help accessing your user profile, registering for events, or other helpful hints.
Online Payments Now Accepted!!
We are pleased to announce that the Central Ohio Local Section can now accept online credit card payments. We are utilizing PayPal to process payments for anything from membership dues, event fees, training costs, etc.
How It Works
If you request a service on our website that requires a payment you will see an option to "Pay Online." If you click on that link you will be redirected to the PayPal website. If you have a PayPal account you can pay with whatever payment option you would like, and if you don't have a PayPal account you will be require you to set up a free account which you can then use your credit card to make a payment.
PayPal charges the COAIHA a fee for every transaction processed, so the COAIHA will add an additional online payment fee to services to recover that cost (e.g. COAIHA member dues are $25, but if paid online you will be charged $26.50).
